This was unexpected

This was unexpected
This happened just a few minutes ago.

I'm moving on to a new job, and I'm really excited about it. In the end, I realize that I'd learned all I could here, and it's time for me to write about things I truly enjoy. That said, I've met some wonderful people here, and we've helped each other get through some pretty stressful situations.

I remember talking to a few of my co-workers about my desire to start a collection of handmade pottery, since I really respect and admire Old World/old time craftsmanship. I figured that if I collected mugs, bowls, plates and so on, I'd have artwork that was also functional. I didn't think anyone here would have remembered this.

I guess they did.

Think outside the (idiot) box

Think outside the (idiot) box
It's pretty sad that I need to read papers from Ireland and the UK if I want to learn what's really going on in my own country (the United States) and around the world. My recent trip to Ireland really drove home the point that the US news media is all useless these days, especially when it comes to television.

If you want to get the real story, check out these sites:

RTE (Irish broadcasting): www.rte.ie/news
BBC (British Broadcasting) http://news.bbc.co.uk
The Guardian (British newspaper): www.guardian.co.uk
The Independent (British newspaper): www.independent.co.uk

I'm still navigating the world of the Irish print press, so if anyone can give me some advice for some good newspapers, I'd really appreciate it.

Every day should be a day of g ood will

0/0 11.09.2007 20:13 English

Every day should be a day of good will
I realized this morning that the overt nationalism displayed on this day (not to mention the use of the tragedy as a political football) has totally turned me off and desensitized me from the memorial services that are held in honor of those that lost their lives on September 11. I've decided that I need to decide what this day means for me, and what I can do to properly pay tribute.

I figure that living my life as an engaged, responsible, concerned and active citizen is better than just hollowly waving a flag.

Pity the former junk food junk ie

Pity the former junk food junkie
I've been craving Oreos for the better part of an hour now. I'm pretty sure this is what Hell is like. Fortunately, I have an understanding co-worker who distracted me for a while, so that helped a bit. Maybe this is more like Purgatory.

I'm resisting the urge to buy one of those "snack packs" as soon as work lets out. I broke myself of the habit of giving in to every food craving that came along, and I'm thinner and healthier for it these days. I'd prefer to keep it that way - it's nice to be able to shop for clothes in normal stores and not feel like crap at the end of each day.

I just need to keep that in mind. Focus on that, not the Oreos.

The tasty, tasty Oreos...

They're all good reasons.

1/0 09.09.2007 18:33 English

They're all good reasons.
Yes, it's all true, right down to the morning activity.

Truth be told, my boyfriend and I have never read a Cecelia Ahern novel, so maybe we're wrong and they're really good. It's just that the descriptions of her novels aren't very encouraging. (You can see for yourself at www.ceceliaahern.ie/books/, if you're so inclined.)

Anyway, I think I'll be chronicling some of my adventures in Ireland here, as well as on my LiveJournal and my Flickr account. Though I can't imagine that there will be any great amount of interest in my vacation, it should be a fun way for me and my friends to remember some good times. Stay tuned and all that.

Tonight I'm gonna rock you (to night)

0/0 26.04.2007 05:12 English

Tonight I'm gonna rock you (tonight)
This did indeed happen. My boyfriend gravitates toward punk and indie. I was raised on classic rock and got into metal in college. Oddly enough, we bonded over a band called The Darkness and rocked the hell out at a Wolfmother concert together. Anyway, he decided that he was going to impress me by playing "Jessica" by The Allman Brothers.

I should have warned him. I really should have. I'm a bad girlfriend. ;)

The setting for the first and second panels is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, where I do volunteer work. They really have rearranged one of the main display areas, and it looks fantastic. If you get a chance to check it out, I'd highly recommend going. And it's the only museum I know of where you're encouraged to sing, dance and bang your head. But you're still not allowed to touch anything.

My friends love me. I think.

0/0 24.04.2007 19:07 English

My friends love me. I think.
I really do need money for all of that. And I really do need braces, apparently. I'm the only 25 (soon to be 26) year old I know of who seems to be aging in reverse. Braces? Come on!

My name's not even Betty...

Anyway, I may be setting up a tip jar on Sound and Vision (check my links on the right), so if any of you feel like donating a bit of cash, it would be well appreciated. Between that and the eventually Selling of the Crap, I may just make enough to buy a stick of gum when I go visit my boyfriend later this year.

Adventure capitalist

Adventure capitalist
Ugh - a bit truer than I'd like to admit. I need to get over my pack rat tendencies.

And before anyone asks, I do donate things to charity. However, I could use some spare cash thanks to some things that are coming up, so I'm looking around at consignment shops in my area. eBay isn't doing it for me, and even if I only get a few bucks, that's still better than nothing. And it also means that I'll finally, finally be able to get rid of all the crap I don't need.

Love is knowing/We can be

Love is knowing/We can be
Hey, they can't all be funny.

I suppose these will pop up every once in a while - little tangents that are a bit more serious than the rest. I blog about it all the time, but tonight, I just wanted to do something a little different. Just a little inspiration to keep me going.

We'll be back to the regularly scheduled weirdness tomorrow.
